Clean, Grey, or Black Water? Why the Category Changes Everything
Last updated 2026-06-22
Three Categories, Three Responses
Under the IICRC S500 standard, water is graded Category 1 (clean, like a supply line), Category 2 (grey, like a washing-machine overflow), or Category 3 (black, like sewage or floodwater). The category decides what can be saved and how the area must be treated.
Why Black Water Is Different
Category 3 water carries bacteria and contaminants, so it requires protective gear, full sanitizing, and the safe disposal of porous materials it touched. It's not a DIY job.
We Identify It Before We Start
Our Arvada crew assesses the water category on arrival and explains exactly what it means for your home, your safety, and your insurance claim before any work begins.
